Unique to Martha’s Vineyard is the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank, which was established by Island voters in 1986 as a response to the “up-spiraling building boom”. The goal was to protect the environment while providing public accessibility. The result is that beachcombers, farmers, hunters, and wildlife lovers enjoy the many Land Bank properties freely. To enjoy these benefits, the Land Bank generates operating revenue from a percentage of the sale price on most all Island real estate transactions.
