Halloween’s almost upon us, and here on The Rock, spooky things are already happening:

We’ve had multiple sightings of – shudder -- traffic lights!  Two of them!  Fortunately, the alien beings are with us only temporarily, directing traffic around repair work at the little and big bridges along State Beach.  They’ll blight the scenery and briefly waylay motorists for the next two years, except summers – and except when a really big nor’easter lays ‘em low.

Our latest nor’easter tore a second breach through Norton Point, a 820-foot gap west of the breach of '07.  Together, the two holes have created a new "island" between Katama and Chappy.

Spookiest and saddest of all:  As of “press time” for FWF Update, there will be no Vineyard-Nantucket football game this football game
this season for the first time in the Island Cup’s 50-year rivalry.  School budget cuts have suspended the annual crossing of the Sound.  Hopefully in 2010, the Vineyarders will get to “harpoon the Whalers” once again.
               
In less frightful news of autumn:
  
* We were in flip-flops through September, and as late as mid-October, we were still scoring fresh-picked corn from the farm stands.  

* We got artsy at the fourth annual MV International Film Festival. 

* And we partied at the third annual MV Food & Wine Festival
benefiting the MV Museum.

More rigorously:
 
* More than 2800 anglers wrestled with the big ones in the 64th annual Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby. 

* Hardy cyclists took part in the cross-island Cycle MV Bike Ride to benefit Big Brothers, Big Sisters. 

* Some of us have been hiking secret beauty spots with guides from the island’s conservation organizations.  

* Or sweating it out on volunteer Build Days with Habitat for Humanity.
 
* Hardly a fall weekend goes by without a 5K race. 

* And very soon, we’ll be raking leaves.  And raking leaves.  And raking leaves . . . .

Thanksgiving promises to be bustling with Vineyarders and visitors alike.  Some of the island’s favorite eateries will serve up holiday fare, New England-style.   Shoppers will find old treasures at the year’s final Antiques Show at Grange Hall and new treasures at the final Artisans Festival at Ag Hall.  And leaf peepers may get a last-minute show; we’re late bloomers in these salty climes.
